Women, unlike wine, do not age well. If we were to carry on with the wine analogy, you should probably stick to whites. Get it while it's fresh and vibrant, but not too young. We don't want to be forced into introducing ourselves to the neighbors as the resident sex offender. Been there, done that, no fun.
The only real answer to this question is 18+. "Appropriate dating," will be determined by you, and you alone. Could I sleep at night if I were dating an 18 year old? Like a rock. But I'm 26 and have a questionable at best social conscience.
If you're having any kind of anxiety about it, start young and get older til you're comfortable. You will be walking a fine line between your friend's envy and a woman's disgust.

ugggh, disgusting. what young woman would want an old man. If she is, she is using you for your money. Don't fool yourself. If you want to be a good person, date women your own age. Men don't age well either -- look at your bald heads -- but we can get over it.
Some men are ok with a gold digger. Some men will just get hookers. What's the difference really? I guess you'd hear one complain more than the other.
